WHO Recommends Chiropractic Adjustments

Back pain is one of the most common causes of disability in the world. It affects people of all ages and has a negative impact on society, economics, and workforce. In fact, it is estimated that back pain costs the global economy over $200 billion annually in lost work productivity and healthcare costs. In the United States alone, it is estimated that up to 80% of adults will experience back pain at some point in their lives. Given the substantial impact, the World Health Organization (WHO) recently commissioned researchers to make recommendations on the most effective evidence-based treatments for non-specific low back pain and provide the WHO with high-quality clinical practice guidelines. Researchers identified several interventions based on an exhaustive search of data found on MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, National Health Services Economic Evaluation Database, Health Technology Assessment Database, PEDro, the Trip Database, the Index to Chiropractic Literature and the gray literature. Based on their findings, researchers were able to develop evidence-based recommendations from high-quality clinic practice guidelines for the WHO. The researchers’ recommendations emphasized manual therapies including spinal manipulation along with education, exercise and cognitive/behavioral interventions. Chiropractic care and spinal manipulation are a safe, effective and natural treatment for not only low back pain, but most spinal pain from the low back up to the top of the neck and head. Chiropractic doctors are primary care providers, fully trained and licensed to evaluate and treat the human body. If they are not the appropriate provider for a particular ailment, they will refer the patient to the appropriate providers. If you’re suffering from low back pain, neck pain, joint pain, headaches or other forms of pain and/or disability, consider chiropractic care today. Many chiropractors provide free or low cost evaluations to determine if they can help.

Family Meals Keep Kids Healthier

According to a recent report published in the Journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics, "Children and adolescents who share family meals 3 or more times per week are more likely to be in a normal weight range and have healthier dietary and eating patterns than those who share fewer than 3 family meals together." The findings are based on information collected from 17 previous studies that included 182,836 children aged 2 to 17 years. These same children are also less likely to suffer from other disordered related eating as well as more likely to make better choices in the foods that they eat. Statistically speaking, the benefits of sharing 3 or more family meals per week includes:

  • a 12 percent reduction in the odds for overweight
  • a 20 percent reduction in the odds for eating unhealthy foods (junk foods)
  • a 35 percent reduction in the odds for disordered eating
  • a 24 percent increase in the odds for eating healthy foods (vegetables and other healthy foods)

With the sharp rise in child and adulthood obesity levels, this simple change can not only help to keep children's weight better controlled but also provide an opportunity for more family time and more opportunities for conversations with ones children.

Get More Sleep and Lose Weight!

New research indicates those who lack adequate sleep tend to consume more food and do so without burning any additional calories. A different but also recent Swedish study found similar results where those who did not have proper sleep burned up to 20 percent less calories per day. In either case, weight gain is the end product. With the work more sleep less hectic lifestyles we have today coupled with the increased consumption of fast foods and sugary drinks, it's no secret why the obesity rates are skyrocketing. It's speculated that one of the reasons for weight gain is the hormones that regulate how hungry we are, when we're hungry and what kinds of foods we crave are negatively affected when we are sleep deprived. Another potential cause are the poor health decisions made when one lacks proper sleep. Lack of sleep has also been shown to be associated with other health related issues. So eat right, be healthy and ensure you remember to get proper sleep.
